Dragonlance MMO in the works?

Okay, so this is complete conjecture by me. But seriously, you don’t have to be a genius to figure out that this is on its way to your sweaty palms.

Interestingly, it looks as though it’s coming courtesy of Curt Schilling‘s new game company, 38 Studios.

To start with, they’ve got R.A. Salvatore on staff – one of the most popular fantasy authors ever. And of course, some of his most popular books are set in the Forgotten Realms universe from D&D. That’s got to help.

And then there’s Todd McFarlane. (hooray for another Calgarian! Oh, and kudos to you, Todd for all your work with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation)

And finally, and most obviously, they’ve got Mary Kirchoff as their CMO, who, in her employee bio page is said to be “the author of twelve best-selling fantasy novels”. Uh huh. At least 5 of which (maybe more) are Dragonlance novels.

So far this isn’t really pointing directly at a Dragonlance MMO. If you’re a complete and total skeptic, that is… until I noticed a news tidbit from a couple months ago on the 38 Studios site announcing that Margaret “Dragon” Weis and Tracy “Lance” Hickman wandered by the 38 Studios offices ‘while they were in town’. Promoting some book. Suuuuure. They just haaaappened to be in town. And I’m Micky Mouse.

Then of course, there’s an article posted (also in February) on Massively.com talking about Dragonlance, and wouldn’t it make a great setting for an MMO? They likely know more than me (who doesn’t?) and are possibly under some sort of NDA or some such. I’m not.

So if this comes true, you heard it here first. If I’m wrong, everyone who comments on this article gets 1 dollar*.

*the one dollar you receive will be via in-game Dragonlance MMO currency. Spend it wisely.

Margaret and Tracy were in town for a book signing. They went to the studio not for dragonlance, but for dragonships, the new book line they’re working on. They’ve been shopping it around to a number of game studios.

Dragonlance, if a game was going to be made, would not use either margaret or tracy for any sort of business deals. WotC has severed all ties with them, and is not currently shopping the dragonlance license around. It’s nice to want things, though.

Sigh. Way to shoot down a dream. ;)

I knew it wasn’t likely, but the signs sure did/do point towards that.

I’m still looking forward to hearing what 38 Studios is working on.
