Comment on why Skyrim will rock to win free games

steamgift

Okay, I admit I was trying pretty hard to push some buttons when I discussed at length some of the reasons why Skyrim might suck. I was trying to provoke some debate and discussion with the idea that it would help improve the game. By fostering honest critique from Bethesda’s biggest supporters, I was hoping that they would listen and take some of our thoughts to heart.

I know that Bethesda has tons of people – the best in the business – working on Skyrim, making it the best Elder Scrolls game yet. I’m not a complete pessimist. But when I play Oblivion and feel like I have to use mods to truly make it shine like the gem it is, I get concerned that Skyrim might also need some polishing. Hence the article.

Let’s discuss why Skyrim will rock

I want people to know that I wasn’t just flaming Bethesda, and I’m anything but a troll. In order to prove that, I’m offering 2 gifts. A $10 Steam gift of a game of your choice and a $5 Steam gift of a game of your choice. Here’s how it’s going to work.

  1. Comment on this article why you think Skyrim is going to rock. Be concise, but have a valid point. I’m going to use my discretion as to what and what doesn’t count, but anything with more thought than “I think it’s going to rock because the world is huge and there’s a ton to explore.” counts. If you reply with “It wil b awsum!1!” – that’s not gonna cut it.
  2. You can comment as many times as you like. Each one that has a valid point will get counted.
  3. The more LIKES your comment gets, the more votes you will get. For example, if I say how much the exploration is going to rock and 3 people LIKE my comment (not reply to), I will get 3 votes for that. FYI, I’m not counting my own comments in this.
  4. Use your CORRECT email address when commenting. If I can’t contact you when you win, no game for you.
  5. The person with the MOST comments (including LIKEs) will win the free $10 game of their choice. The person with the second most gets the $5 game.
  6. The deadline is 9pm MST on Sunday, July 24th, 2011.
  7. I reserve the right to use your comments in my next article and I will quote you.
Any questions, message me on the contact page or post it in the comments and I’ll reply right away.

By the way, there’s no catch here. I’m going to spend $15 of my own money and gift games to people who comment. I’m a long-standing member of Steam (oliverh72) and you can find me on XBL (gunRunnr). I just want to read your comments.

I’ll get the ball rolling here.

Skyrim is going to rock because…

I love Bethesda’s worlds – they’re massive and there’s simply tons to explore. The fact that this world is hand-crafted means it’s going to rock even more.

Dual-wielding. Fire & Ice. Together at last.

Perrrrrks, baby! I love perks – they give you a whole new reason to love leveling up.

One of the many reasons I think Skyrim is going to rock is because of the provisions added in the new engine, and the way they sound like they will be naturally integrated into the world. Things like dynamic weather, the ability to run, and conversations that don’t zoom right into someone’s face will (hopefully) make the world feel much more natural and alive.

Also, I’m excited to see how these provisions will be used in the creation of the next Fallout game.

Additionally, I’m excited to see how the new progression system will work, with the removal of class selection / skill specialization during character creation. I’m all for complexity in RPGs, but the leveling system in Morrowind and Oblivion were both a little confusing and counter-intuitive, since it was necessary to leave many skills you planned on using as minor skills to level up effectively.

If this new system can feel more intuitive without resulting in all characters basically being the same once you reach a higher level, then I’m all for it.

When Morrowind came out, it was the best fantasy role playing game of its time. When oblivion was released, it was the best fantasy role playing game of its time. What they are doing with skyrim is exactly what I wanted too see: new crafting abilities for immersion, more dungeons, more exiting landscapes, more varied locations, numerous small towns, dragons, better less clunky combat, epic high level spells (magically pulling off zombies heads anyone?) and so much more interactivity with speech and soforth that there is no chance it will be bad, in fact from what I have seen so far,, it will be the no.1 landmark that other RPG’s will have to beat, and as we can see from previous titles in the elder scrolls, it wont be beaten until the next one… elder scrolls VI: summerset isle maybe….?

I’m pretty excited about the dungeons, big time. I remember using the Diverse Dungeons mod for Oblivion so that they’d feel more unique. It was awesome.

Skyrim will be awesome because it will be improving on perfection “Oblivion”
We will wander the world doing quests and be excited doing so.
Dragons will make the game more suspending as they appear randomly and look awesome.
Guild Quests are always fun and interacting with npc’s are way fun.

Don’t Choose Me, It’ll be a waste as im a console gamer.

I believe Skyrim will rock because, quite simply, it is an Elder Scrolls game. Morrowind blew my mind, as did the succeeding Oblivion. Neither of these two games are perfect, far from it, yet both still compelled me to sink over a hundred hours in each, per playthrough, and that was in vanilla Oblivion & Morrowind.

The main reason it will rock, as an Elder Scrolls game, is modding. Every Bethesda game has had a vibrant mod community, for us fortunate PC aficionados, most prominently so for Oblivion, with literally hundreds of mods, some completely overhauling the entire game. I have high hopes for the mod community with Skyrim, and with as it is an Elder Scrolls game, the game itself will be stellar, but the mods available propelling it to become something unbelievable, dare I say perfect.

Well, I believe Skyrim will rock for several reasons, the first I will get into in this comment. Skyrim is implementing a new leveling system, which will no longer have ‘major’ and ‘minor’ skills. Instead, they increase faster as you use them, while you still level up the same way as you did in oblivion. There is also of course perks, which will always be a nice way to further customize your character as you progress and level in the game.

But I bring this whole thing up because this is one of those things that will make Skyrim great, since with that you aren’t really forced to conform to one class, you can be what you want, without having to worry about being stuck to the skills you chose at the start of the game, but instead focusing on some skills, and then slowly branching out in the order of which you want to get the game.

The second reason I believe Skyrim will rock is because of the whole new customization coming with the game. Gone away are the people who might always look practically the same as in oblivion (the customization in Oblivion was, and let’s be honest, kind of bad compared to the new system coming in oblivion). In oblivion, the non human races didn’t really look non-human, more like the same mundane faces with horrible party masks on them instead. In Skyrim though from what screenshots we have seen they actually look nonhuman. There have also been a few other screenshots of human characters, with the recent game informer issue’s screenshots compared to screenshots that came out earlier, there will be a difference between human faces as well.

That mean there will hopefully be diversity with the faces, and in fact gives the game a better experience by having many different faces in the game, as with the many diverse faces in life.

And the third and final reason I believe Skyrim will rock, is the Radiant AI/Story system in the game now. With this, your world will be truly unique to you, with your decisions causing impact in the game as well as more realistic reactions from npcs, for example:

Let’s say you’re in town, walking through as people go about their daily tasks. blacksmiths blacksmithing, beggars, well begging, merchants barking and selling their wares, how they would in real life medieval times(which is the impression I am getting from what they are saying on this whole system. After all, this is all speculation so bear with me here).

You go into someone’s house while they are home, and begin smacking their stuff (and them) with your pointy metal stick. They won’t be just “Oh hey stop doing that!” or just not even react to it at all. They will get angry if they don’t know you, and there might be a chance that they might attack you, call the guards in an attempt to remove you from their abode. So, you take your sword, and stick it in them a few times. People find out, the guards get most likely called, and your reputation is lowered after people find out you just became a murderer. Real things happen when you do something.

The Radiant story system will keep track of those actions, put some side quests in different places, what dungeons you have been to, and what you’re doing. You won’t be going to a dungeon you already cleared to save a kidnapped/missing person, you will be heading into unexplored territory. You also won’t be doing mundane tasks as well, which is part of the point of the implementation of the radiant story system.

So yeah, those are my points, I think that these are some of the biggest improvements to skyrim since oblivion, other than than the whole you know, dragonborn, magical dragon shouts super power thing, anyway, same old same old with the elder-scrolls right?

Skyrim will taste like ass rim but with moar horny goat weed sensationalism. This my sore assed fake ass friends is the EXACT reason why TES will get weeks, no months! Of pure abuse. Oh and that’s why it’s the sh*t… Oh and why it rocks too… Yeah.. The Duke is back.

Give me my games now which i’m FULLY ENTITLED TOO! Or else i won’t be happy enough to talk more complete and utter bullsh*t, then who wins? HUH? YOU? Yeah, we have an understanding with each other now, it will be ok, don’t maflugin’ cheat ya greasy bastgarrrrddd.

Another reason I’m excited for Skyrim is because of the changes to combat that are promised. Instead of every encounter turning into a hack-and-slash, it sounds like there will be many more options open to players, and like the combat system has been made more enjoyable.

Some specifics that I’m excited for in this regard:
    – Dual-wielding, and experimenting with the different combinations

    – Ranged combat getting revamped to be stronger, but slower firing, making it a much more viable option (bonus points for this being influenced by a community mod)

    - Finishing moves to make combat feel more visceral (so long as they don’t become intrusive after 50+ hours)

Well, thought I would add one more thing about how skyrim will rock to what I said before. Todd Howard said that Skyrim will be culturally unique, making the point that there is a difference in architecture shown with two different areas shown in screenshots and trailers. That means the game will have (from what Todd said) a more realism, with different areas being… You know, different. And more real.

Oh and the whole dynamic snow system, realistic weather is always a plus in my book, and I would like to see how that will work.

Mainly, the point is that realism is a big thing they are trying to improve upon, and these things are helping to make it happen.

Skyrim is going to rock because..
The lore! There is nothing better than huge world filled with lore!
Descriptions on items about their history or points of interest, like in baldurs gate. Lots of books! Places of mystery, that never give away their secrets! Your mind gnawed by questions.

    And them mods. Creativity emboldened!

Skyrim will REALLY rock if there will be mod giving you possibillity to wield dual tombraider-like pistols. Lack of this kind of mod made me stop playing Oblivion (well, there are some gun mods for Oblivion, but they sucks).
